Episode 23 - Conversations with Kaila June
Monday Sep 21, 2020
Monday Sep 21, 2020
Today's Conversation is with Kaila June
Kaila June is the founder of SomaKinese School, a virtual platform for movement teachers and therapists encouraging personal, social, and planetary change through somatic healing and embodied movement science. Kaila is also the developer of Somatic Groundwork™, a mindful movement practice that soothes the nervous system, restores tissue integrity, and deepens sensory awareness as a pathway to healing and self-knowing.
As a dance-artist, Registered Somatic Movement Educator, and Corrective Exercise Specialist, she has dedicated her life to helping people move and feel better. Drawing from somatic movement education and weaving research from the fields of biotensegrity, neuroscience, and the healing arts, Kaila is totally vested in the art and science of movement education as a vehicle for shifting the global body. Kaila has dedicated her life to using movement as medicine and her approach has emerged through a systems science, co-creative, somatic way.
In today’s conversation we talk about her Somatic Groundwork Online Courses and Intelligent Motion Training, what is SOMA, exploring movement, patterns, the essence of being, cultural embodiment and anti racism and oh so much more..
A little heads up, both Nikki and I are big fans of Kaila's work and approach to the somatic arts. I can get a bit "fanboy" like at times but it's because this work and Kaila herself are resonating highly with where and who I am at the moment.

Episode 16 - Conversations with Michael Polon
Monday Aug 03, 2020
Monday Aug 03, 2020
Today's Conversation is with Michael Polon.
Michael’s first introduction to Rolfing came as a client, when seeking help with a series of sports injuries and improvement of moderate scoliosis. His interest in the body began early as a result of these ailments and he began his college years on track to become a physical therapist. After experiencing the power of Rolfing as a client in Boulder during his early twenties, Michael shifted gears and quickly enrolled at The Rolf Institute® in 1998. Immediately following his graduation in 1999, he was invited to re-enter the classroom as a teaching assistant and has been involved with teaching in Rolfing and Continuing Education classes ever since.
After almost 20 years of study, Michael still has the same beginner’s excitement when it comes to exploring the art, science, theory, and practice of Rolfing. Through consistent study and continuing education classes with Rolfers, as well as with Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, Psychotherapists, and Movement/Rehab experts, Michael learns more about what is possible with this work each year. His enthusiastic curiosity of how people (and their bodies behave) fuels his passion for understanding how anatomy, physiology, movement, posture, pain, and healing potential all come together with this work.
Michael is so easy to talk to, and each conversation I have leaves me both wanting more time with him and also more time on my own to digest the richness. Check out more about him at https://www.rolfingdenver.com/

Episode 14 - Conversations with Gail Wetzler
Monday Jul 20, 2020
Monday Jul 20, 2020
Today's conversation is with Gail Wetzler
Gail currently owns an integrative physical therapy practice in Denver, Colorado, where they treat orthopedic, fascial/muscular/soft tissue, neurologic, pain, respiratory, digestive, mTBI and women's and men's health issues. After receiving her initial degree in physical therapy, she pursued her first experience in acute orthopedic care at Hoag Hospital, Newport Beach California. Within 1 year, she became the outpatient clinical supervisor and thus began her journey and desire for continuing education in the science and art of human movement and function. She studied with Travell and Simons, Mennell, Kaltenborn, Maitland, McKenzie, Mitchell, Jones and Greenman in the earlier years of manual therapy education. Inspired by these methods of treatment, she became an assistant teacher to Dr. Janet Travell and later an instructor with the Institute of Physical Art (IPA) developed by Gregg Johnson and Vicky Saliba Johnson.
In a few years, she developed her own private practice, at which time she received a large number of head, neck and TMJ pain patients. This became a driver to learn more about cranial osteopathy, craniosacral therapy and how the fields of physical therapy and dentistry could collaborate to help these patients. As she pursued continuing education classes with Dr. John Upledger, he inspired her to learn more about the different systems in the body and how they all integrated for function. During one of her earlier speaking engagements for thew Upledger Institute ( Beyond the Dura), she met Jean Pierre Barral DO, who inspired the importance of anatomy, the ability to listen to the body and the specificity of tissue dialogue in manual therapy techniques. She has listened and followed his mentoring into understanding the body's deeper fascial relationship of the viscera, vascular, neurological and manual articular systems since 1989. Gail has been an instructor for the Barral Institute (BI) since 1991 and became the BI Curriculum Director in 2001.
In her career, she has been invited to speak at multiple professional conferences including National and State levels for the APTA, USC Head, Neck and Facial Pain Clinic, University of California, Irvine (UCI), Beyond the Dura Research Conferences, "Hope" Head Injury Organization, and was the keynote speaker in Italy for the Fascial Manipulation Research Conference presented by Antonio, Carla and Luigi Stecco. She is the Past Director of Physical Therapy for the Integrative Medicine Center at UCI. She is currently part of the Research Team for the Upledger Foundation for their recent studies on Post Concussion Recovery She currently teaches for the Women's Health Section of the APTA "Gynecological Visceral Manipulation"
Gail earned her Diplomate from the Barral Institute in 2005. She earned her Equine Diplomate in Osteopathy from Vluggen Institute of Equine Osteopathy in 2009 and she earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Rosalind Franklin University, Chicago, in 2013.
